Lightspeed 3.1

Introduction

Lightspeed lets you change the CPU clock frequency of your Palm OS 5 device.

- Overclock and increase Performance!
- Underclock and increase Battery Life!

These settings can be changed individually for each software application.

For processor intensive applications - such as Games, Emulators, Image Viewers, Movie Players, Database applications, Map Viewers, 3D Graphic Renderers etcetera - the CPU clock can be set as high as possible to maximize the system performance and user experience.

For less processor intensive applications - such as PIM applications, Launchers, Ebook readers etcetera - the CPU clock can be set as low as possible to maximize the battery life!

The different CPU clock settings have been tested thoroughly with each of the supported devices. The possible settings in Lightspeed are the ones that have been found very stable during testing and are somewhat different depending which of the supported devices Lightspeed is used with.

Requirements

Lightspeed supports virtually all Palm OS 5 devices. Clocking support exists for multiple processor types - Intel XScale, Texas Instruments OMAP, i.MX1/i.MXL and Samsung processors. For a complete list of supported devices visit the FAQ section at www.clievideo.com.

Getting started

Install Lightspeed.prc to your Palm OS device. Lightspeed needs to be installed to internal RAM, it can not be run directly off an external memory card. If a version of Lightspeed is already installed on your device, you may need to perform a soft reset without enabling Lightspeed before the new version can be installed.

Launch Lightspeed, change the settings for your applications, check the "Enable" checkbox and run your applications at their new speed settings!

User Instructions

Lightspeed lets you set the CPU clock settings individually for each application in internal RAM and also for applications that are run off an external memory card.

When an application is started, the CPU are set to the clock values the user has chosen for this particular application.

The values for each app can be set individually, all applications can be changed to the same value at the same time or a selected group of applications can be selected and changed to the same value.

Choose between Multiple/Single to change either multiple applications or a single application at one time. When an app is selected click on Change to change the settings for this applications, or tap on the application name in the table to do this.

A "High" setting and a "Low" setting can be set for quicker changing to often used settings.

A "Default" setting can be set to automatically set newly installed applications to another value than the standard value.

There is an Enabled/Disabled button. Click on it to switch between Enabled/Disabled Modes. When Lightspeed is Enabled it will change the clock settings when apps are launched and when it is Disabled it will not.

For some devices Lightspeed can be used to launch the applications in the application list in Lightspeed. Change the CPU speed of an application then launch it directly from within Lightspeed. This is done on Treo and Centro devices by pressing the hardware side button, and on Sony Clie devices by pressing the Back button. Scroll through the application list in Lightspeed and when the application that you want to launch is selected press the appropriate button to launch it.

In the Preferences screen one can choose whether or not to manually enable Lightspeed when the device boots and whether or not to show the intro splash screen when Lightspeed launches. If the "Scan ext. card when when launched" checkbox is selected Lightspeed will scan any external memory card for applications that are placed in the "/Palm/Launcher" each time Lightspeed is launched. When this is unchecked Lightspeed will only scan the external card each time the card is inserted.

When the Palm OS device is turned back on Lightspeed sets the CPU back to the speed the user has selected for the current application. If the "Dont handle device wakeup" option is checked, Lightspeed will instead do nothing when the device powers on.

For devices which has an OMAP CPU there is also an option to reduce the annoying high pitch screen noise which some devices emit.

The Preferences screen are accessed via the menu inside Lightspeed. The menu is accessed by either tapping on the Menu Silk Screen button in the Silk Screen Area or by pressing a dedicated hardware Menu button on devices which has a keyboard.

When running any other application, Lightspeed can be launched from within that application via the Palm OS Command Bar. The Command Bar is accessed by writing the Command Grafitti character or by pressing a Command hardware key on some devices. For devices with no Grafitti area applications such as "Grafitti Anywhere" can be used to write Grafitti anywhere on the screen and access the Command Bar.

When Lightspeed is launched via the Command Bar the settings window will become active and will display the CPU speed of the current application running. The CPU speed setting can be changed, and when clicking on the OK button the CPU will be set to run at the new speed. When the settings window is closed the current application will continue to run right where it was before Lightspeed was launched, it will not have to be restarted. Before launching Lightspeed via the command bar in a newly installed application it is recommended to start Lightspeed once normally so that it can update it's database of installed applications.

Registration

Lightspeed can be used without registering during a trial period of 14 days. In the trial version some features are disabled:
- Applications that are run off an external memory card will always run at the standard frequency.
- Applications that are started via ZLauncher and PowerRun shortcuts will always run at the standard frequency.
- Launching Lightspeed via the Command Bar from within other applications to change the CPU speed is disabled in the unregistered version.
- Automatic enabling of Lightspeed after a system reset is disabled in the unregistered version, Lightspeed needs to be enabled manually.
- Occassionally when applications are launched and Lightspeed is changing the CPU speed a registration reminder will be displayed in the unregistered version.

To use these features and to continue to use Lightspeed after the trial period is over Lightspeed needs to be registered. Get registered by going to www.clievideo.com.
