Treo 800w Specifications and Features
The Palm Treo 800w debuts on Sprint with a slate blue color with a soft touch exterior finish. It is outfitted with a 320x320 pixel TFT color touchscreen, a decently sized QWERTY thumb keyboard and the usual navigational pad and application buttons. A 2.0 megapixel camera is on the back that features 2x digital zoom and video capture. Also situated around back, is the removable 1150 mAh lithium-ion battery good for an imaginary 4 hours talk/200 hours standby rating. A new micro USB 2.0 port is used for power and data transfer and is the sole means for audio out via an included stereo headset.

The device is powered by a Qualcomm MSM6800A chipset running at 333 MHz. 256MB user memory is on board (approximately 170MB available user memory), with 128MB program memory. For memory expansion a microSD/microSDHC card slot is along the side of the device which can support cards up to 8 GB.

The Treo 800w has dimensions of 2.28" (W) x 4.41" (L) x 0.73" (D); (58 x 112 x 18.5 mm) and weights in at 5.0 oz (142 g).

The device is also notable for being Sprint's first smartphone to debut with EvDO Rev A support. EvDO Rev A technology provides even faster wireless data speeds and Sprint says a "vast majority" of its network has been upgraded to Rev A. According to Sprint data, average download speeds now range from 600 kbps to 1.4 mbps (up from 400 - 700kbps) and uploads speeds in the range of 350 - 500 kbps (verses 50 - 70 kbps with EvDO Rev 0).

Wi-Fi
A major highlight for any long time Palm/Treo follower is the inclusion of Wi-Fi. The 800w supports both 802.11 b/g networks as well as 802.1x (EAP-PEAP, EAP-TLS and EAP-TTLS). Palm has made it simple to setup and manage Wi-Fi connections via a dedicated Wi-Fi button on the top of the device with can connect to open or known networks and power down the Wi-Fi radio via the touch of a button.

With integrated GPS, the Treo 800w smartphone offers maps, point-to-point directions and point-of-interest (POI) searches for locations such as restaurants or stores. POI search is available directly from the Today Screen and is integrated with contacts. The Treo 800w also supports Sprint Navigation for turn-by-turn directions as well as other popular third-party location-based services applications.

Note: It appears that when Sprint pushes out a mass OTA PRL update the phone will update properly. This bug only seems to happen with the flagged OTA updates. This may indicate that the problem is on the Sprint side, and not with the 800w.

% E7 C9 A4 o) e( UIn Palm's Maps program (Programs->Maps), if you search for a multiple instance item, eg "usps", "fedex", "citibank" the first couple of times you execute a search the results are sorted by distance order. After that they are random, often returning very great distances and place closer instances further down or not reporting them at all.

- L3 t# T" C; _1 r/ HNote: The .DLL for the dialpad has both blue and orange skins in it. It seems that Palm somehow displays one over the other, or something goofy like that. (Palm never included the required settings/config to change the skin.)

A soft reset while the 800w is plugged into a computer (via USB data cable) may cause the 800w to hang (WM to not load) on the Palm splash screen.

Workaround: Disconnect 800w from the computer, pull battery and reset.
Note: This may not be a bug. I asked Palm about it and they said it was intentionally done to help reduce possible bad ROM flashes (WM loading before flash is all the way done). Basically when the phone is hooked up to a computer, the computer can still access the phone without WM booting all the way.

. G0 E2 Z* r6 N+ ?Workaround: Turn off error reporting (this does not seem to negatively impact the phone or performance). You can try hard resetting, sometimes GWES does not throw errors after a hard reset (and sometimes it will.)
After initiating a hard-reset and selecting yes for "Erase Data", the phone reset and only came up partially. It hung (I waited for 10 minutes) and it never got to the "Tap the screen to set up your device" etc. The USB cable was not plugged in at the time.

5 X$ E" o6 Q. `& z( F" U: `( aGPS (non-assisted, or stand-alone) gets its location data from satellites orbiting above the earth. When you first turn on the GPS function, there will be a delay while the GPS device searches for satellites. The wait time is exacerbated by poor signal conditions, such as when you're surrounded by tall buildings, you're indoors, or you're under trees. In addition, when first turned on in these conditions, some non-assisted GPS units may not be able to download the almanac and ephemeris information from the GPS satellites, rendering them unable to function until a clear signal can be received continuously for up to one minute.

! T1 ]' Z5 G+ X. R) T7 z" _A-GPS gets its location data from nearby cellular towers, who in turn get their data from a constant connection to GPS satellites. The towers keep track of satellites in range, so your phone can ping the tower and know which satellites to try to connect to, speeding up the process greatly.

GPS vs. A-GPS on the Treo 800w
  M: n6 |" s4 G4 ~Treo 800w supports stand-alone GPS and A-GPS. Stand-alone GPS is used when the cellular radio is off or the device is not connected to the cellular network.

For optimal performance, the use of A-GPS is recommended because it significantly reduces the time to get the location fix. This requires data connection to cellular network, so your smartphone must be on and connected, and you must be subscribed to a data plan from your mobile service provider.

Sprint note: While a "Sprint Navigation" subscription is included in most data plans from Sprint (including the "Simply Everything" plan), this subscription is not required to use the GPS search bar on the Today screen or the Maps application in the Programs folder (Start , then Programs). However, users must subscribe to and use Sprint Navigation for turn-by-turn directions and audible directions. To launch Sprint Navigation, select Drive to… in the Maps application, or select Sprint Navigation in the Programs folder (Start , then Programs).

You can use stand-alone GPS in the following cases:

When the data network is not available or the cellular radio is powered off.

To use stand-alone GPS:

Turn on the cellular radio (press and hold the red button) to acquire the system time from the network. This is necessary to acquire the first GPS location fix. You can do this even if you don't have a voice/data plan from a mobile service provider.
Once the system time is acquired, turn off the cellular radion (press and hold the red button); it is not needed to get GPS location fix.
9 j: ^4 S( w2 p5 `4 ]The step to power on the radio to acquire system time is necessary whenever Treo 800w is reset.

It may take as long as 8 to 10 minutes to get a fix on a satellite. Once the GPS fix is obtained, the location must be shown on a map. For this, there are two options:

Real-time maps: The maps for your location are downloaded real-time to your smartphone. The GPS search bar on the Today screen, the Maps application in the Programs folder (Start , then Programs), and applications such as Live Search for Windows Mobile behave in this way. To download the maps in real time, a data connection is needed. Since the cellular radio is off, you can use Wi-Fi to download the maps; the exact compatibility and the speed of download will vary greatly in this case.
On-device maps: The alternative is to store the maps locally on your smartphone. You can do this by adding a third-party application such as Garmin to your device, and storing Garmin's maps on an expansion card. In this scenario, you can use stand-alone GPS to get the device location, and the third-party maps on your SD card to display your location on the screen. No data connection – Wi-Fi or cellular – is necessary.
