2 J/ g2 y% `/ GRecentlyI took some time to look at and try a few chat clients for Palm OS.AOL's chat client crashes my TX and the reviews for ICQ's old Palm betaversion are largely negative. I tried Chatopus, but I couldn't get any of its "transport" servers to give me access to my non-Jabber chat services. Verichatand others require annual subscriptions or else charge by usage amount;if I chatted all the time, maybe, but I don't, so such subscriptionmodels are out.& N R; G/ A* J6 V1 [! h/ B- n
All of which more or less left MunduIM.I downloaded a free trial; it promptly crashed while setting up myfirst account, perhaps because I mistyped my user name, but everythingwent well after the reset. It allows simultaneous connection to twoIM accounts (ICQ, AIM, MSN, or Yahoo!), can run in the background whileyou do other tasks (though I've not tried this feature), and costs $14.95 from PalmGear,just once--no subscriptions, no pay-per-use. Fractional versionupgrades are free (MunduIM always checks for updates when logging in),but full versions will require some cost. I can live with that!, A8 a/ i$ C* n/ J1 j; \* ^
After a few hours of playing with MunduIM, I decided to pony up. Forthe little I use chat, this program works very well, although those whouse characters outside the ASCII set might have trouble (as somereviewers have claimed). As I chat in English only, this doesn't botherme; in fact, thanks to MunduIM and my AirMac (as it's called in Japan)wireless LAN, I expect I'll chat more than I have in the past.
