[From Brian] Hello Sammy, With all of the recent discussion about theleak of a Palm Sherlock in Sprint's product roadmap and pastrevelations about Palm's "Secret Third Business", I did a little bit of online reading and reflection about where Palm might be taking us with an information-centric device.
* [8 {; L' C9 Z2 kI'd like to point out that to the best of my USPTO searching, Palmdoes not own the trademark Sherlock, so it is likely that the nameSherlock is a codename along the lines of Hollywood, Lowrider, etc.

Along these lines, I would like to point out an active trademarkthat Palm holds, Foleo (Serial #78555579). I'll quote the summary andhighlight some portions that I think suggest that it is related toPalm's "Secret Third Business":# o0 O. q( z8 _: y
Apparatus for recording, transmission or reproduction ofsound or images; computer hardware and peripherals and manuals soldtherewith; computer hardware and embedded software for use in accessingstoring, managing, synchronizing, transferring, transporting andsharing digital information and files over the global communicationsnetwork and other networks and/or between computers, electronicorganizers, electronic notepads, mobile telephones and pagers, PIMs,PDAs and mobile computing and communications devices; computer laptopsand mobile computers; computer monitors; computer keyboards; computersoftware for use in accessing, storing, managing, synchronizing,transferring, transporting and sharing music, photos, videos, addressbooks, calendars, e-mail, PIM data, PDA data, office and personaldocuments, streamed and multimedia information and files over theglobal communications network and other networks and/or betweencomputers, electronic organizers, mobile telephones and pagers, PIMs,PDAs and mobile computing and communications devices; computer softwarefor synchronization of data, information and files, for mobilecommunications and computing, for personal information management,database management and synchronization, for character recognition, andfor secure data access, storage and transfer; computer software for webpublishing, providing alerts to various informational and environmentalconditions , for accessing, browsing and searching online databases,for data and file backup and storage, and for duplicate file managementacross multiple devices ; telephony management software; electronicmail and messaging software, paging software, and manuals providedtherewith
& B) M6 g+ `( q+ b4 ]3 F5 i/ c1. "storing, managing, synchronizing, transferring, transporting andsharing digital information and files over the global communicationsnetwork and other networks" and "streamed and multimedia informationand files over the global communications network and other networks"indicate that this trademark is related to devices and services thatuse global and other communications networks, fitting in with Hawkins' and Colligan'sstatements about the implications of having a broadband connection inyour pocket and delivering compelling services to Palm's users oversuch a connection.

! B) l/ V0 _- P; o. \* {+ u* ^8 C Q: Can you give me a better idea about what this "child" technology is?* A S1 U, r! O* C# M& D
A: Not really. I'll give you a couple clues. I always think ofmobile computing as personal computing. This long-term vision has ledus through everything -- first the organizers and now through the smartphone space. It's like everything a personal computer is. Continue downthat path. What are the implications of a world where everyone has asuper high-speed Internet connection in their pocket and many gigabytesof storage, super-fast processors, audio, visual and multimedia? Whatare the consequences of that? How will that change computing when youhave all that stuff available to you all the time? I try to think intothe future. That's how we come up with new products. So I'm not goingto tell you what it is, but it's following the consequences of mobilecomputing.
7 f( N4 a2 @( T* zEd Colligan at the Churchill Club Breakfast:/ u' L! P, f+ v% E. e# a
They (users) have a high-speed connection...to theirpocket...Boy, is there things we can deliver to them, and is therecompelling experiences that we can deliver to them, that are going tohelp us differentiate our products? I think there are, and we'reworking on things like that.
( X* M% R0 ?* B2. "providing alerts to various informational and environmentalconditions" - More services, but this also hints at possible contextand locations based services that provide alerts.
! |8 O, H/ e' r) b$ r( k( GEd Colligan at the Churchill Club Breakfast when asked about GPS-enabled handhelds:
7 K( Z; m9 C/ x
5 u5 V/ g4 X0 V* O, E$ O That's one of them, no question....And the usage, that's goingto be one of the really interesting discovery points of new usage andhow do I use the fact that I know where I am... that other things knowwhere I am, or other systems know where I am and that I opt-in to letthem know where I am?
|. \* Z$ p6 y3 U+ {) m! F6 c& j3 ASo that's why I think Foleo is related to the "secret third business". What about the name Foleo?
' j8 L; G* F$ IFoleo, is a play on the word folio:
, B7 E( {* i5 @" i; s! t+ x A large sheet of paper folded once in the middle, making two leaves or four pages of a book or manuscript.
/ Z" E$ G* p: k* H+ ^" M! uA book or manuscript of the largest common size, usually about 38centimeters (15 inches) in height, consisting of such folded sheets.
: o" f5 W& D% \. A) P A leaf of a book numbered only on the front side.
( }9 R0 S. H( N" a7 z3 j A number on such a leaf.; {' B' E6 Q% K
A page number.
1 {, ~, W- {2 M! t# a' g Accounting. A page in a ledger or two facing pages that are assigned a single number. O7 o: F5 o9 I2 y7 u0 F" ^
Law. A specific number of words used as a unit for measuring the length of the text of a document.2 t$ S; x* O6 K" c2 I
Emphasis in bold is mine.- N8 I- W5 }2 H6 @% y K! I
I'd submit that the way Foleo is spelled, similar to Treo (bothending with eo), fits in with Palm's branding and product naming. Thisname could hint at the device's capabililties, size, and form factor. Afolio suggests a book or manuscript that folds. Palm has these twopatents on folding devices and displays:' W+ h* t9 Q9 B
Compact palmtop computer system and wireless telephone with foldable dual-sided display6 d# N2 N1 H0 C" \$ {
Non-rigid mounting of a foldable display3 R) x8 m7 f3 A- F
What could this all add up to?
& u% N% M3 u$ X. Q8 E1. A folding device with multiple displays (two or more).
* g% x+ f* J2 E) H8 K2. Such a device is used as a "folio"; a book, notepad, manuscript, diary, journal, encyclopedia, etc.
; ~6 B: Q4 f& U; B9 X/ W3. Wireless services for storage, syncing, streaming of data acrossthe web and multiple devices, including secure data storage and access,and streaming multimedia.
$ r5 Y7 Y! G4 c4 @$ N3 L% R4. Context and location aware services with alert notifications./ W Z/ d$ S- ^2 }; a5 v/ C
5. Services for searching and accessing online databases./ @! f4 R% q* d" Y! M1 r, y
This would be an information-centric device. But with wirelessconnectivity (WiFi and 3G), it could also be a communications device(Voice over Wireless Local Area Network hybrid?) and a pretty decententertainment device with a good sized screen for streaming video andother multimedia.
2 n: y* s! v' g" e' m. [( g" QI'd also add that this reminded me of Michael Mace's Info Pad concept, and he has been making a case for a more information-centric device. Thanks to this postat Michael's great blog, we can be pretty certain that, whatever Palm'ssecret project ends up being, it is coming soon. Will it be called thePalm Foleo?
