While analysts have been speculatingthat Apple may unleash a smaller (and cheaper) handset in the not toodistant future in order to grab a sect of market share not interestedin the relatively pricey iPhone, the rumors are seeming to gain traction. According to Kevin Chang, a JP Morgan analyst based in Taiwan, Appleis actually looking to "launch a cheaper version of the iPhone in thefourth quarter that could be based on its iPod nano music player." Thereport cited anonymous sources "in the supply channel" and alsoreferenced the now-famed patent that suggests such a device could bematerializing. Still, we'd highly recommend taking all of this in witha healthy heap of salt for the time being, but don't be incrediblyshocked if your next iPod nano unexpectedly rings while you're stereotypically browsing through Gorillaz tracks.

Oh c'mon, it did sound too good to be true, did it not? To just about everyone's chagrin, the hope-filled commentsmade yesterday by Kevin Chang have now been retracted by JP Morgan, andit looks like the iPhone nano will return to the depths of ourimagination for the moment. According to a rebuttal put forth by theNorth America Equity Research division, the firm "has not been able toindependently confirm" his comments with a second source, and alsomentions that "a lower-end iPhoneappearing in the near-term would be unusual and highly risky." Notably,putting the rumors to rest wasn't the only order of business in thewriteup, as it was suggested numerous times throughout the documentthat JP Morgan believes a "high-priced, non-subsidized 3G model" will surface "in the first half of 2008."Squashing one piece of scuttlebutt whilst conjuring up another(entirely more probable) report, now that's the way we like it.
