IBM's WebSphere Studio Device Developer fully supports the run-time and palmOne device simulators in its 5.6 release. This release of Device Developer contains new coding wizards that can help you create projects containing mobile applets, or MIDlets. It also provides a visual editor with a graphical user interface (GUI) palate onto which you can arrange visual elements of MIDlets. 4 M- g1 T- j3 x% x( e: V

Java developers can now make their existing MIDlets available for palmOne users. No customization is required. However, developers can choose to customize MIDlets to take advantage of the flexibility of the palmOne product lines, with their power, memory, range of input options, sharp, colorful and extended displays, and wide area, local area and personal area network connectivity.

The IBM WebSphere Micro Environment is a run-time platform compliant with Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME). On Palm OS 5, WebSphere implements the J2ME specifications for the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) Version 1.1 and the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) Version 2.0.

5 y* e' R$ D! ?The WebSphere Micro Environment toolkit contains the run-time, run-time components, and a small set of utilities that enable development and packaging of Java applications for WebSphere on Palm OS. The toolkit is intended for developers who have a general understanding of J2ME concepts, including familiarity with MIDlets, JAR files, and JAD files.

* |, k* U7 z3 LThe run-time components (Palm Resource, or PRC, files) included in the toolkit are designed to work on the palmOne Tungsten line, the Zire 72, and the Treo 600 devices running Palm OS 5.2 and above, as well as the Palm OS Simulator for Windows.
